There are plenty of well-known sites along the Dorset coast visited each year by divers all around the Weymouth & Portland Bill area. However, there are many wrecks that still have very little known information about them. The purpose of this project is to survey identify one or two wrecks which have previously been located by the Shipwreck Project using expensive, towed side-scan equipment to produce tantalising data.
This project aims to target the Lyme Bay Cannon site (could be the Alexander) and the Brandy wreck, so named because of an impressive Brandy bottle found. Utilising information obtained from existing sources, including Wessex Archaeology and the results of the 2018 expedition and preceding trips in 2019, we will continue to collect new information that will assist with the identification of these wrecks.
As well as collecting and sharing information, it is hoped that this expedition will actively promote further interest by other divers to continue searching, surveying and supporting the identification of wrecks along the Dorset coast.
Three dive trips have been planned for 15-19 June, 20-21 July and 31 Aug-1 Sep.
The project team is made up of divers from Aldershot Dolphins and Richmond Sub-Aqua Club. We hope to publish updates from Cameron (project manager and team leader) and his team after each trip.
