Balaclava Bay & More!

June 2, 2024

Saturday 1 June – Hamid writes…

I wanted to share my experience from my first two RIB dives from Portland Marina.

First Dive was a drift dive at Balaclava Bay.   The dive reached a maximum depth of 20 metres, characterised by gentle and steady currents that made for a relaxed and effortless drift. The conditions were ideal for observing marine life, with clear visibility enhancing the underwater scenery.    One of the most exciting aspects of this dive was the variety of marine life encountered. The highlight was the sighting of numerous spider crabs, notable for their long legs and distinctive appearance.

Our second dive was on the wreck of the Bombardon in the Bay.  (15 metres.) We had good visibility and plenty of light from the surface, making it an enjoyable dive.

Again, I want to thank David, Matteo, and Fari (cox) for all their help and support during my first drysuit diving experience at Portland.    We dove as a group of three, and I felt very comfortable having Matteo on my left side and David behind me.  They made it a very relaxed and enjoyable experience for me.

Who knew UK diving could be this good!    An almost tropical 10m+ visibility, first dive on the great Black Hawk Bow, stop for lunch and ice-cream at Lulworth Cove, then dive under Durdle Door, slowly winding our way through the kelp.

A tip: if you drop a shot-line on your site, then navigate with the chart plotter to a different location, don't expect to find your shot there...
